Matt Lucas has revealed that his father dying at a young age persuaded him to get into shape after he gained weight during the Covid-19 pandemic.

The comedian, 48, showed off his newly slimmed-down frame as he hosted Tuesday's premiere episode of The Great British Bake Off.

Speaking about his weight loss, he said his father died from a heart attack at the age of 52 in 1996, when Matt was 22 years old, and it made him reflect on his health as he now approaches 50.

Matt said he also decided to change his lifestyle after he had gained weight due to eating 'a lot of roast potatoes' and being less active during lockdown.

Speaking to Gabby Logan on The Mid.Point podcast, he said: 'I'm 48, my dad died when he was 52, very suddenly, his dad died I think at 56, so I was looking at the law of averages here.

'I was very big and I was getting bigger in the pandemic actually. Sort of not being very active, not really going out, not seeing people, just eating a lot of roast potatoes. I can't tell you how many roast potatoes I ate!'

Matt said he has slimmed down from a XXXL to a medium and explained that he doesn't eat as much as he used to, but still enjoys the occasional sweet treat.

'I was so big I couldn't really fit on screen anymore,' he continued.

'The thing is if you're big, and by the way I've still got a proper tummy, I'm not skinny, by any means, I've just lost some weight.

'I've gone from maybe a XXL, sometimes I was a XXXL, down to a medium now I think.
