Australian fashion designer Alex Perry has given a rather brutal explanation for why his brand is no longer popular in his own country.

Perry launched his eponymous label in 1992, and quickly became known for his opulent red carpet gowns and jewelled corsets.

Yet Perry, 59, claims his designs were never 'cool enough' to really take off in the Australian market, forcing him to take his business overseas.

'I was never the one to watch, or the cool one, it was always all about these other designers. But I kept thinking, 'I make really good clothes and I think they are really beautiful',' the Australia's Next Top Model judge told Sunday Confidential.

While Perry's garments are stocked in both Myer and David Jones, he claims his garments simply don't appeal to Aussie shoppers.

'So I started to look at what I was doing and I thought 'you know what, I think I am pretty cool', but it is in a glamorous way, not what cool is defined as here,' he said.

'I always thought, I am not sure … I don't know if they are going to want my clothes overseas,' Perry added.
