HBO has released the first trailer for their highly-anticipated TV adaptation of the wildly popular video game The Last Of Us.

The video debuted on Monday - September 26 - which, in the world of The Last Of Us video game is known as Outbreak Day, when the cordyceps fungus first started spreading throughout the United States.

The video also offered quite the surprise for fans, revealing Melanie Lynskey (Yellowjackets) is part of the series, with the actress herself tweeting the trailer along with, 'Surprise!' 

The trailer begins with Joel (Pedro Pascal) walking through a city, as we see signs warning of cordyceps infections, while others are painting over a red emblem.

The trailer - set to Alone and Forsaken by Hank Williams - finds Joel in a building looking at a red painted text - 'When you're lost in the darkness,' as we see a chain attached to his ankle.

Ellie (Bella Ramsey) is seen hiding in a tunnel with others while another shot shows a toppled building resting against another.
