October was first declared as National Domestic Violence Awareness Month in 1989.

Since then, people have used October as a time to acknowledge domestic violence survivors and give a voice to the many victims.

Following with that trend, singer Ashanti took to Instagram to pay tribute to her sister, Kenashia Douglas, who escaped a violent relationship in 2020, but not before suffering bloody injuries at the hands of her abuser.

As part of her tribute, which aims to help others going through a similar situation, the singer and actress (born Ashanti Shequoiya Douglas) shared a series of horrific photos taken of Kenashia's bruised and battered body, including very graphic images.

The cover image shows her leaning back in a bed with a severely bruised left eye, which was followed by images of serious bruising legs and arms.

There's also a video highlighting the deep scratch marks all along her neck, and a another video that documents one of the attacks she endured where the abuser can be hear yelling and screaming as he dished beats on her.

'It is Domestic Violence Awareness month. Words will never be able to express the amount of pain, fury and disgust I feel reliving these moments… but at the same time I am so proud of how strong, courageous, resilient and unbreakable you are,' Ashanti began in her lengthy post.
