Channel 10 paid a fortune for rights to the Melbourne Cup, but it looks like the investment hasn't exactly paid off.

Just over a million metro viewers tuned in to watch Gold Trip triumph at Flemington Racecourse - a record low for TV coverage of the race that stops the nation.

The five-city audience of 1.024 million was a drop of 345,000 from last year when 1.213 million tuned in. It is also the lowest television viewership for the Melbourne Cup since records began 20 years ago, reports the Herald Sun.

It was a serious blow for Channel 10, which reportedly paid $100million in 2019 to secure the broadcast rights for the Melbourne Cup Carnival until 2023.
