Joanna Gaines' mother was left in tears after reading the manuscript of her daughter's new memoir The Stories We Tell.

During an appearance on Today, Joanna, 44, revealed her mother Nan Stevens called her crying 'every five seconds' over the book after she was given a manuscript of the new tell-all.

'When the manuscript was finished, I printed it out and I wanted her to be the first person to read it,' Gaines recalled. 'Every five seconds she'd call, "I'm crying!"'

'I think I had to write it out to really explain, but for her even to just hear what her little girl was processing. It was a sweet moment for us,' she said.

'Then it shifted to where, I am so intrigued by what was she doing as we were living this life, I was just trying to make it and be fine, she was doing the same thing in her own little world.'

Gaines also revealed how her Korean mother would respond to racist remarks hurled her way.

'When we were in the grocery store, I mean numerous times, people would say and she would just act like she didn't hear,' she recalled.

'So I'd look at her to see and she'd straighten up her shoulders. She's like 4ft10, 4ft11. She'd wear really high heels and just straighten up. "Let's go." I always thought it didn't affect her.'

Joanna's parents, Nan and Jerry Stevens, recently celebrated their 50th
