Kate Ritchie won't be encouraging her eight-year-old daughter Mae to follow in her footsteps, and instead wants her to walk her own path in life.

The actress and radio presenter, 43, who rose to fame playing Sally Fletcher on Home and Away, told The Australian Women's Weekly she won't be pushing her child 'in any direction'.

'Everyone on Home and Away thought I was only working part time and everyone at school thought that I had the best job in the world because I got to leave school early,' she said.

'But combine all that together and it's a bit full-on! I just want to make sure that I'm not pushing Mae in any direction. I don't want her to think that she belongs to anyone apart from herself.'

Kate said her daughter, whom she shares with ex-husband Stuart Webb, has already expressed an interest in starting a YouTube channel, which she said is 'never going to happen'.

While she's not encouraging her vlogging career, she is keen for Mae to pursue extracurricular activities she enjoys.

'I encourage her to try lots of different things. She does dancing on Saturdays as well as gymnastics and swimming,' she said.
