Jay Leno hit a police car as he arrived for his much-hyped comeback performance on Sunday - six days after being discharged from a burn center following a fiery accident that seriously burned his face, chest and hands.

The comedian, 72, was driving up to The Comedy & Magic Club in Hermosa Beach, California with wife Mavis for his regular, evening set when the rear right tire of his Tesla collided with a police Jeep in front of scores of onlookers.

Hearing the ominous crash, the police officers could be seen turning around startled as the TV legend pulled up in front of the club.

The star was filmed checking with police if he had 'hit their tire' with  cops saying it was 'no big deal', with no damage done to either of the cars.

Jay, who was seriously burned after an explosion from one of his vintage cars set him alight, looked happy and healthy as he addressed the press, quipping: ‘Ah, the elephant man is here,’

He added: ‘I’m not stage yet, I just got here. We’ll give it a shot, let’s see what happens… Stay away from the Flamin’ Hot Doritos!’

‘No, we got two shows tonight. Regular and extra crispy! Never thought of myself as a roast comic! Thank you, thank you, goodnight. I got burned, I was in hospital for a few days, and now I’m back out working again. People do that every day!'

The venue has served as a home base for Leno nearly every Sunday since the early 1990s, as a place where he can test out new material for his stand-up act and old Tonight Show monologues.

The club's beachside location has long been a favorite destination for comedians and audience members alike. Many of the top comics like Leno in the industry have and continue to call this their home club.

The staff at the club made a 'Welcome Back Jay' sign, which also read 'We Love You' on it.

Once inside, Leno and his wife were joined the club's owner, who sat with them for part of the evening.
