In an emotional episode of her Emsolation podcast this week, the media personality said she was 'proud to be neurodivergent' and now had a better understanding of her past behaviour. Reintroducing herself to her listeners, the 43-year-old said: 'My name is Em Rusciano, I'm a writer, a singer, a stand-up comedian, a podcaster, a maximalist power queen.' In an emotional episode of her Emsolation podcast, Em Rusciano said she was 'proud to be neurodivergent' and now had a better understanding of her past behaviour She then added: 'I am also an autistic person and I have ADHD!' Em explained that she'd just received her official diagnosis for autism, having previously self-diagnosed herself with the condition. While she was unsure whether or not she wanted an official diagnosis from a doctor, she ultimately decided that it was in her best interest to do so. 'I think with my brain especially, I need rules and if someone who is smarter than me and better than me at this topic assesses me for many hours and says, "Yes, you are autistic," then I have to accept that.' Em explained that she'd just received her official diagnosis for autism, having previously self-diagnosed herself with the condition Em said that now she had a diagnosis, she had to start 'making allowances' for herself and her past behaviour. 'I have to stop using really negative language and negative stories that I've built around certain behaviours that I thought were because I have faults and I'm a s**t person, where in fact I'm an autistic person,' she explained. 'And even saying that out loud makes me emotional and I'm really proud to be neurodivergent but I think again it's that grief of forensically going back over all those times that my autism has made things quite hard, not just for myself but for other people. All of Em's children are neurodivergent, including her three-year-old son Elio, who is autistic. Pictured together 'And I genuinely couldn't help it, but I've carried a lot of guilt since, so that's why the diagnosis was important for me.' On Friday, Em went into more detail about her diagnosis during a series of posts on Instagram. 'I understand I might not fit your preconception of what autism is but that's not my job to do that. I was diagnosed by a specialist in the field,' she said. Em said she was 'mind-blown' while filing out the questions relating to her condition because it was like 'they were describing my childhood'. Her list included struggling to follow recipes, maps and instructions. 'I can't wear a hair tie or scrunchy around my wrist, it makes me feel like I'm suffocating,' she explained.
