Candid: Kate Garraway, 55, emotionally discussed husband Derek's health battle during an appearance on Friday's Lorraine She told host Lorraine Kelly: 'And the thing is when it’s a long battle like with Derek, there's no end point and it can be exhausting for the people around me too'. 'I know sometimes people say “oh she's talking about that again” but what I’ve learnt is you only really know what it feels like unless you’re in it'. Before adding: 'And now I get contacted by thousands and thousands of people who make me feel less alone'. Ben teased: 'Kate is so incredible in the way that she’s juggling all these balls in her life. I go to her house and my instinct is to put everything in the bin and get rid of all the junk she’s got lying about in there'. Kate replied: 'Ben, all jokes aside and as cheeky that he can be, has been amazing'. Hard work: The Good Morning host admitted that there 'is no end point' to his care and her new way of life can be 'exhausting' for those around her Thank you: Kate joined co-host Ben Shepard to discuss ITV's GMB’s loneliness campaign and took the opportunity to thank him for his unwavering support It comes after Kate thanked husband Derek as she won her second award for Best Authored Documentary at the National Television Awards last month. The broadcaster fought back tears as she accepted the gong for her documentary, Caring For Derek. She won the award last year for her first documentary, Finding Derek, which focused on Derek's health battle after being first hospitalised with the coronavirus. Honesty: She said: 'I know sometimes people say “oh she's talking about that again” but what I’ve learnt is you only really know what it feels like unless you’re in it' Accompanied by her 16-year-old daughter Darcey on stage, Kate said that Derek is continuing to 'fight' after he brefly returned to hospital with sepsis. She said: 'Well I really didn’t expect this. So, the mercy of that is that this is going to be brief as I have very little prepared. 'I’ve got my daughter here, Darcey. Darcey represents all the family. We managed to speak to Derek, he is back in hospital at the moment, fighting on so incredibly. We’re hoping he is coming home again soon. She continued: 'I want to thank Derek for his incredible fighting spirit, we love you. I want to thank ITV for being so brave to put something which actually is touched in all the incredible documentaries, about care. 'We have a care crisis in our country, but we don’t have a crisis of love. The professional carers are extraordinary, the millions who care for who they love are extraordinary. 'And I think that’s probably why you voted for this, because you know it’s all of you. We all feel alone, we all need some care and love. 'So thank you so much, it means the world to all of those people. Thank you so much.' Caring For Derek won against stiff competition from Katie Price: What Harvey Did Next, Tom Parker: Inside My Head, Julia Bradbury: Breast Cancer and Me, and Paddy and Christine McGuinness: Our Family and Autism.
