Olivia Colman is defending her on-screen son from bullies after actor Kit Connor, came out as bisexual.

The harassment began when the 18-year-old starred alongside Olivia, 48, in the Netflix series Heartstopper, as a rugby player whose relationship with another boy at school may lead to more than friendship.

Kit made the announcement on Halloween via Twitter writing, 'Back for a minute. I'm bi. Congrats for forcing an 18 year old to out himself. I think some of you missed the point of the show. Bye.'

At the Los Angeles premiere of her film Empire of Light Thursday, the Oscar winner went into mama bear mode as she told Variety she was 'so proud' of her co-star.

'I am so proud of him, but I am not proud of how people bullied him. I think people should be allowed to have their own journey.'

'But I'm incredibly proud of him as a young man to deal with all of that and be in the spotlight. It's unfair,' she continued. 'But he's amazing. He's a very beautiful human being.'
