The American comedian, 49, was surrounded by cartons of beers at an alcohol-free beach in the eastern suburb of Coogee - but it was unclear if the drinks were for him or members of his entourage.
Chappelle, who is in Australia for his stand-up tour, was seen relaxing beneath a large beach cabana with boxes of local ale sitting next to him.

Drinking alcohol at Coogee beach is prohibited 24 hours a day, with penalties reaching up to AUD$2,200.
