Hugh Bonneville and Jason Watkins took to Twitter on Saturday to wade in on the ongoing drama surrounding Gary Lineker and the BBC after the broadcaster made the decision to pull him off of the air.

The actors poked fun at the channel by getting back into their famous roles from the 2014 mockumentary sitcom W1A - in which their characters work for the BBC.

Gary, 62, will not present the flagship football show Match Of The Day this weekend after the BBC decreed his 'Nazi' jibe tweet that compared the Home Office's immigration policy to 1930s Germany breached impartiality rules.

BBC bosses told the former England striker on Thursday afternoon that he either had to stop his politicised posts or quit the BBC altogether.

And joining the host of stars to get involved in the saga, Hugh and Jason acted out a skit through a range of tweets to one another - where they pretended to be in charge of finding a replacement for the sportsman.

W1A ran from 2014 to 2017 and saw Hugh play Simon Harwood, the Head of Values at the BBC - while Jason portrayed manager Ian Fletcher.

Calling each other their characters names, Hugh kicked things off by tweeting a false schedule plan: 'Right no yes it's all perfectly under control: Alan Sugar's going to present #MOTD and if Ian Wright does end up playing truant, Richard Sharp says Boris Johnson will stand in for £800,000. So that's all good. #W1A'

Keen to keep things going, Jason replied: 'Yes no brilliant brilliant brilliant Ian. I mean you'll know how you want to deal with this but Timmy sweating a little as is, (did you know?) Boris is asking for the 800K PER SHOW.

'He knows less about football than he does about throwing a party. And Alan supports Spurs!! #W1A'

Continuing in another tweet, Jason added: 'Ah now no yes, it’s a knotty isn’t it? Shearer going behind the
