Liam Payne fans took to Twitter this week to joke he and ex Cheryl had 'couples surgery' after they both debuted drastically different looks.

The One Direction star, 29, set tongues wagging recently with his newly chiseled features after possibly undergoing buccal fat removal.

Meanwhile Girls Aloud's Cheryl, 39, who shares son Bear, five, with her former partner, showcased a 'very taut' complexion when she arrived for another performance of her West End show on Tuesday. 

Taking to Facebook one cheeky fan wrote:  'He's been to Cheryl's Doctor for some 'work'.

While another added: 'Think him and Cheryl must have had plastic surgery at the same time'.

A third agreed saying: 'Same surgeon with his ex Cheryl!'.

While a fourth implied he had followed in the footsteps of the Queen of Pop, 64,: 'And they been to Madonna's [surgeon].

Aesthetic experts have weighed in on Liam transformation after he surprised fans with his drastically different look. 

The fast growing trend of buccal fat removal among celebrities and social media personalities alike cuts out fat pads from the inside of a person's cheek, giving them a more angular face as a result.

Aesthetics doctor at Lumenis and founder of Skin Doctor Clinics, Dr Saleena Zimri has now given her expert opinion on what she believes has happened, saying: 'It does look like Liam has had some kind of buccal fat removal with the possibility of a jaw implant also.'

Speaking about the rise in popularity of the procedure she added: 'The majority of people I see who have had or are seeking this type of treatment are typically in their 20s to 40s with full, round, or "chubby" cheeks who seeks a more defined facial appearance.
