A look-back at the Royal Family's visits to the soaps trends now

The Royal Family are no stranger to visiting some of the nation's biggest soaps, having made multiple visits to their iconic sets over the years.

Whether it be the Coronation Street cobbles, Emmerdale village or EastEnders' Albert Square, Her Majesty The Queen, and her son, King Charles, have delighted the cast with their appearances in decades past.

The late monarch enjoyed four public engagements at UK soaps throughout her 70-year reign, the most recent being just a year before her death.

Earlier this week, as a Patron of The Acid Survivors Trust International, Princess Anne also visited the Corrie set ahead of the soap's hard-hitting storyline which sees Daisy Midgeley targeted by an acid attack.

So, from pulling a pint in the Rovers Return to a surprise on-screen cameo, MailOnline takes a look-back at the Royal's Family's most memorable soap visits.

Her Majesty's first serial drama visit came in the early 1980s, when she visited the Corrie lot to officially open its new outdoor set.

Accompanied by The Duke of Edinburgh, the Queen met with the soap's creator Tony Warren, as well as producer Bill Podmore, writer H.V. Kershaw.

She also spoke to many of the soap's cast members at the time, including  Eileen Derbyshire (Emily Bishop), William Roache (Ken Barlow) and Anne Kirkbride (Deirdre Barlow), who all stood outside their characters' houses on the set.

At the time, it was such huge news for The Queen to visit the set, that it was broadcast live on ITV in a one-off programme called The Queen in Coronation Street.

Years before he ascended the throne, King Charles followed his mother by visiting the Corrie set to unveil a plaque in honour of the soap's 40th anniversary.

The then-Prince Of Wales paid a visit to the legendary Rovers Return, and met with cast members including Jacqueline Pirie (Linda Baldwin) and Jack P. Shepherd (David Platt).

Charles went onto make a surprise cameo in an upcoming episode, when his conversation with Liz Dawn (Vera Duckworth) and Sue Nicholls (Audrey Roberts) was edited into that day's episode, which was broadcast live.

The scene saw Audrey, who was a councillor at the time, speaking to Charles in a 'live news bulletin' about protests the council's attempts to dig up Coronation Street's famous cobblestones.

The scene had been filmed during Charles' visit earlier in the day, with the Palace agreeing beforehand that it could be used, and the King was credited as himself during the episode's closing moments.

During her Golden Jubilee tour, The Queen visited the Emmerdale village, where she was given a 45-minute tour of the set.

She was also able to witness an explosion being filmed, with the village post office completely blown to pieces.

However, the visit wasn't smooth sailing, with This Morning's soap expert Sharon Marshall revealing in 2022 that Her Majesty suffered a near-miss on the set.

Speaking after the monarch's death, she said: 'She went to see the actual scene of the post office being blown up and a piece of wood apparently blew a lot closer than everyone was expecting.

'She didn't flinch, doesn't move at all, she just continued with the tour.'

Mark Charnock, who plays Marlon Dingle, added: 'She was cool as a cucumber when the explosion went off. The rest of us jumped out of our skins.'

During her visit, the Queen spoke to cast members Stan Richards (Seth Armstrong), Paula Tilbrook (Betty Eagleton), Deena Payne (Viv Hope) and Tony
