Reese Witherspoon and Jim Toth have spent 'less time together' over recent months due to the actress' work schedule.
An insider told People on Tuesday that they didn't 'come to the decision to divorce easily and hastily.'
The source added, 'It took a long time. This is so hard for both of them. There's no drama. These decisions are so difficult when there is so much friendship and love there.'
This comes after a source told PageSix that it was an 'badly kept secret' in Hollywood for months that they were over. That means their split took place some time in 2022.
It was also shared this week that the star is 'upset' over the marriage ending.
The 47-year-old movie icon and Jim, 52, announced their separation last week. Reese and Jim wed in March 2011 and soon after welcomed their son Tennessee, now 10.

Reese and Jim recently announced their split in a statement posted on Instagram.
The Big Little Lies actress and the talent agent explained that in spite of their break-up, they're 'moving forward with deep love, kindness and mutual respect'.
The statement read: 'We have some personal news to share ... It is with a great deal of care and consideration that we have made the difficult decision to divorce.
'We have enjoyed so many wonderful years together and are moving forward with deep love, kindness and mutual respect for everything we have created together.
'Our biggest priority is our son and our entire family as we navigate this next chapter.
'These matters are never easy and are extremely personal. We truly appreciate everyone's respect for our family's privacy at this time.'
The Oscar-winning actress has Tennessee, with Jim, as well as Ava, 23, and Deacon, 19, with her ex-husband Ryan Phillippe.
