In the age of modern dating, it's often difficult to figure out if someone is single, casually dating, or in a committed relationship.

But there are five sneaky ways to work out if someone is single without having to ask them, 'Are you single?'

Kyle and Jackie O producer Jaimee 'Mayo' Blazquez, who is married, explained the methods on air this week.

She tested the 'tricks' on five of her male colleagues in front of radio host Jackie 'O' Henderson, who is single and dating.

The first method involves asking the person where they spent their last holiday. If they have a partner, they'll usually mention them here.

This question worked: the man said his last holiday was in Canada and he volunteered, without being asked, that he went with his 'partner'.

The second tip is asking if a person bites their nails.

'So then naturally, they'll put their hands up so you can look and see if they have a ring,' Mayo said.

This method didn't go to plan in the studio, however, because when Jackie asked the second man if he bites his nails, he refused to show his hands.

Eventually she persuaded him to show them, and she saw he didn't have a ring.

The third method involves asking them 'something about dating in general' - for example, asking them 'how late is too late to turn up on a date'.

They tried this line on another male KIIS FM staffer, who said, 'Oh, geez. I'd say about 15 minutes.'

Jackie then casually asked when his last date was, and he confirmed he was single and dating by responding: 'Last date was last week.'

The fourth trick is to 'mention a dating app'. This typically prompts a person who is not available to say something like, 'Nah, I don't do the apps. I'm in a relationship.'

When Jackie asked this question to a colleague named Michael, he volunteered that he isn't on any apps because he is 'freshly' single.

The fifth method doesn't really qualify as sneaky: you just ask the person if they are seeing anyone.

'Are you single?' Jackie asked
