HBO's The Idol debuted on Sunday amid much controversy and negative reviews, though that didn't lead to huge premiere numbers.

The series premiere episode - entitled Pop Tarts & Rat Tails - debuted to a soft 913K viewers on Sunday night, across all HBO platforms, according to Variety.

That figure represents a 17% decrease from the series premiere of The Idol co-creator Sam Levinson's critically-acclaimed HBO series Euphoria in 2019, which drew 1.1 million viewers. 

It's worth noting also that, when Euphoria debuted in June 2019, HBO Max had not yet debuted, with the 1.1 million viewers counted across the show's linear cable broadcasts and on-demand viewing on HBO Go and HBO Now.

The rest of Euphoria's first season averaged 1.2 million viewers per episode, which The Idol could theoretically best if the viewer average continues to improve throughout the six-episode season.

Euphoria's launch also benefited from debuting after another hit series - Big Little Lies - in its second season, while The Idol was released alongside Game 2 of the NBA Finals on ABC.

While The Idol did come in under the debut of Levinson's last HBO series Euphoria, the 913K viewership was still relatively on par for other
