Sinead O'Connor revealed her iconic tears in the 1990 video for her song Nothing Compares 2 U were for her 'abusive' mother Marie.

On Wednesday, the legendary singer's family announced she had passed away aged 56 leading to an outpouring of grief all around the world.

In her video for the heartbreaking track, a Prince cover, she was seen in a close-up shot staring at the camera, during which tears ran down her face.

Marie died aged 45 when she lost control of her car on an icy road and crashed into a bus, when Sinead was 18, after which the star spoke at length about the pain she suffered at the hands of her mother while growing up.

Speaking about the crying scene, she said: 'I didn't know I was going to cry when I sang in the video because I didn't cry in the studio recording it. I think it happened because there was a big eye on me (camera) recording me.

'Every time I sing that song I think of my mother. I never stop crying for my mother. I couldn't face being in Ireland for 13 years because of it.

'I cut myself off. I never called home and it took me 25 years to stop crying. I was thinking of her my subconscious was also thinking of that little girl out in the garden...

'I think it's funny that the whole world fell in love with me because of that crying in the video. I then went and did lots of crying and everyone said 'you crazy bitch' but they fell in love with that tear because it was a mirror on themselves.'

In 2017, Sinead spoke on Dr Phil about her fraught relationship with Marie, who she claimed ran a 'torture chamber' and delighted in hurting her.

She said: 'I am fed up of being defined as the crazy person or the child abuse survivor... She (her mother) ran a torture chamber. She was a person who took delight in hurting you.'

When asked what she loved about her mum, Sinead replies: 'That she's dead.'

The late star's death, which came after her son Shane's suicide last year, sparked an outpouring of grief in her native Ireland and around the world.
