The actor, 59, sported bloodied make-up for the energertic scenes as he laid on a yellow and red board and fought his way through the waves.
Despite the hard work the actor, who donned a black wetsuit, appeared in great spirits and flashed a huge smile during a pause in the action.
The upcoming psychological thriller see's Nicolas' character return to his Aussie home after living in the US and is humiliated by local surfers who take ownership of his childhood beach.
The Hollywood star has been joined down under by his wife Riko Shibata, 28, and their 14-month-old daughter Sunday.

Nicolas and Riko met in Japan in 2020 when he was filming Sion Sono's Prisoners Of Ghostland and after getting engaged on FaceTime, the couple tied the knot at the Wynn Hotel in Las Vegas in February 2021.
The star is shooting The Surfer, a psychological thriller, in Western Australia's most famous surfing and wine region.
