Gareth Whitton was crowned the winner of Dessert Masters 2023 in an emotional grand finale episode on Tuesday night, but things didn't go down without a hitch.

During the two-course service challenge, there was a shock moment when Gareth  sliced his thumb open while cutting rhubarb for his initial dessert. 

But Gareth has claimed the incident wasn't like it was depicted on air.

'On TV I was cutting rhubarb and then next thing I cut my hand and I was bleeding. But actually I was de-moulding the entremet of wattle seed and chocolate mousse,' he told Yahoo Lifestyle,

Gareth said he got paring knife to trim the edge of the entremet and this is when he cut his thumb.

The pastry chef picked up the highest score from judges Melissa Leong and Amaury Guichon for his final dessert, beating out fan favourites Jess Liemantara and Reynold Poernomo.

He explained that as a pastry chef he wasn't accustomed to using sharp knives, and the utensils in the Dessert Masters kitchen were all completely new. 

Despite this mishap, the pastry chef picked up the highest score from judges Melissa Leong and Amaury Guichon for his final dessert, beating out fan favourites Jess Liemantara and Reynold Poernomo.
