Callum Turner opened up on forming a close bond with his co-star Austin Butler and reflected on his childhood as he covered the latest issue of GQ Hype.

The actor, 34, is currently starring in Masters Of The Air, a war drama Apple TV series, which boasts Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks as executive producers.

He plays Major John 'Bucky' Egan, a real-life bomber pilot, opposite Austin, 32, as Major Gale 'Buck' Cleven and Barry Keoghan as Lt. Curtis Biddick.

Speaking to the publication, Callum gushed about his famous co-stars, and revealed he and Austin have 'a very special relationship'.

Speaking about Saltburn star Barry, 31, he said: 'I love him. He's inspiring.'

Callum then discussed his friendship with Austin, explaining they bonded during breaks from filming, by grabbing meals together and going on walks with Callum's dog. 

He said: 'Austin and I have a very special relationship. It's deep, and it's profound. I've made friends through the years that I love. 

'And there are people that you work with, and have a great time with, but they don't necessarily become your friend. You still love 'em. But Austin's my friend.'

He explained that the pair exchanged voice notes before getting to work on shooting Master of the Air, right after Austin had wrapped filming his breakout film, Elvis, which garnered him an Oscar nomination.

Callum described hearing Austin's voice, which he famously modified to copy Elvis Presley's distinctly southern drawl.

He recalled: 'It was like a voice note from Elvis, you know. And I just sent him a message: 'Elvis has left the building'.'

Callum also spoke about his childhood, being raised by his single mother Rosemary on a council estate in London.

He described his upbringing as a 'beautiful, crazy, tumultuous' time, admitting that despite being enjoyable, there remained a 'constant threat of violence'.
