Roman Kemp has spoken out on the devastating reason for his decision to leave his Capital Breakfast show.

In February, the radio host, 31, revealed he was stepping down from the show, after 10 years of presenting for Capital FM.

He has now said he's been 'living that same day over and over again' after his friend Joe Lyons, who worked on the show as a producer, committed suicide in August 2020.

Roman said he needed to take time out for himself in a bid to heal from the death of his friend.

He told the Daily Mirror: 'I need this time for myself. I've been at that company (Global) for 10 years, on that show for seven now.

'I've tried to spin the plates and tried to do everything and I've realised it's getting in the way of my life. You can't enjoy your own life.

'If you think of a radio show, every day you've got to go out in front of the public and dance and every now and then you've got to give yourself a rest and I've not been doing that for myself.

'It came to that point of "I need to leave this behind now".'

Speaking about his best friend and colleague Joe 'Producer Joe' Lyons being related to his decision to leave, he added: 'It's to do what happened for me. That sounds wild but I mean it, it's not normal, imagine a tragedy happened in your house you're going to want to move.'

Roman struggled to hold back the tears on Wednesday morning last week, as his Capital Breakfast co-stars surprised him by hosting the radio show from the dressing room of Emirates Stadium.

Roman's last show was on Thursday, after which he will be replaced byJordan North, 34.

To mark his penultimate show, his co-hosts Sian Welby and Chris Stark decided to surprise him by blindfolding the star and then taking him to the home of his beloved Arsenal football club.

Speaking to listeners, Chris explained: 'So, the story is we’ve been planning this for weeks in secret, and the best bit is Roman Kemp still has no idea where he’s going.'

The duo then rang Roman, as his car pulled up outside, with Chris saying: 'So to set the scene a little bit, am I right in thinking you’re currently wearing a blindfold?'

Roman replied: 'Well, I’ve been wearing a blindfold for the past like hour and a bit now, since being in this cab.

'I was slightly worried about getting into a car blindfolded and just letting it go
