Valerie Bertinelli, 63, says grieving the death of her mom, dad and Eddie Van ... trends now

Valerie Bertinelli has talked about dealing with grief after she lost her mother, father and ex-husband Eddie Van Halen.

Her father Andrew died in 2016, mother Nancy passed in 2019, and Eddie lost his cancer battle in 2020.

The 63-year-old Hot In Cleveland told Travel + Leisure magazine this week that she finally decided to deal with her emotions to get over the pain.

'Until I started to actually feel my feelings, walk through them, not be afraid to walk through them, truly get to the other side of them, and understand them, my life wasn't going to change,' she said.

And it was gratitude that got her out of her 'deepest, darkest' place in life.

'Gratitude is everything. It sounds so simple. It is challenging, but in the end, it truly is simple,' said the One Day At A Time actress.

'I think gratitude has served me the best when I'm in the deepest, darkest places of what's happening in my life.

'Until I started to actually feel my feelings, walk through them, not be afraid to walk through them, truly get to the other side of them, and understand them, my life wasn't going to change,' she said

'And I still remember to be grateful and to truly remember the saying, "What if everything works out for me?' Just believe that everything's going to work out, and you'll get through this."

She finally got sick of her situation.

'I was tired of my script. I'm lucky if I have 20 or 25 years left. And I want them to be the happiest years of my life.'

But all those hard times has made her stronger today. 'I know that I wouldn't be the person I am today had I not had the challenges that I've had since 2016. I would've liked for all of that not to have happened. But I'm grateful for where it's gotten me.'

The pain she felt fueled her writing.

'I wrote that book while I was in the middle of grief. I was still grieving my father, my mother, [and] Ed had just passed,' she said.

'I was grieving what my son had to go through and the challenges that he went through in taking care of his father. I was grieving so much. So there was like this super storm that came into my life, and I wanted to get to the other side of it.'

The TV star also talked to Travel + Leisure about traveling.

'I'm such a tradition-focused person. I like my rules, I like my boundaries,' she noted.

'And with travel, you have to let all that go. And you just have to enjoy yourself in the moment. And I have learned to do that, especially traveling, following [my son] Wolfie around.'

She is also flexible about where she goes and how she stays.

'I'll stay in the least expensive hotel, and I will stay in a beautiful hotel just to spoil myself. I am OK anywhere you want to put me. Do I love the prettier hotels more? Sure. I mean, I like to indulge in those as well, but I love traveling [and] I love new experiences. I also love going back and finding new experiences in places I've been to before,' said the cover girl.

This comes after she said she got over her body issues with a little help.

She told People that it was thanks to 'more consistent therapy, more journaling and meditation' that she got over her shape.

The Los Angeles resident also shared with the site that she eats what she wants and if she craves pasta she will eat it. But the former Jenny Craig poster girl will make sure she is getting the nutrition she needs.

In the past, she said on social media that she has been taking more power walks and doing Pilates to shed the pounds, adding she slimmed down when she stopped drinking alcohol as well, so she is working hard on keeping healthy.

She also said that after she lost weight she tried on her 'before clothes' from her Jenny Craig shoot from 2009 and they fit.

Instead of being disappointed they fit her just right, she said she felt comfortable. And when looking back at how she was shamed for fitting in those clothes she now feels that shaming was wrong and out 'diet culture' is not healthy.
