Tom Holland's Romeo and Juliet set to 'transfer to Broadway' after West End ... trends now

Despite not having even opened yet in the West End, Tom Holland's Romeo and Juliet will reportedly transfer to Broadway later this year.

The Marvel actor,  27, who will be starring as Romeo, is taking to the stage at London's Duke of York's Theatre for a 12-week run next month after tickets sold out just two hours after going on sale in February.

Fans compared the stress of trying to get their hands on tickets as on par with Taylor Swift's Eras tour, which has brought in $1.04billion with 4.35m tickets sold across 60 tour dates.

A source told The Mirror about the transfer: 'Romeo & Juliet will head to Broadway after its London run, with details to be announced in due course'.

'While director Jamie Lloyd has made a name for his minimalist adaptations of classic texts, the headline grabber for what is essentially yet another production of Romeo & Juliet is undoubtedly its leading man'.

MailOnline have contacted the show's producers and Tom's reps for comment.

It comes after the production, which also stars Francesca Amewudah-Rivers as Juliet, faced a 'barrage of deplorable racial abuse' following the diverse cast being announced.

A statement from the theatre company on Friday denounced the shocking backlash as they vowed to 'continue to support and protect everyone in our company.'

The Jamie Lloyd Company shared: 'Following the announcement of our Romeo & Juliet cast, there has been a barrage of deplorable racial abuse online directed towards a member of our company. This must stop.
