Chris Hemsworth has revealed he was turned down for a role in a Kevin Costner-directed film, only to discover that Costner had cast himself.

Speaking to Entertainment Tonight at CinemaCon in Las Vegas  on Thursday, the Australian actor, 40, said he fell in love with mystery project and even tried to convince Costner, 69, to change his mind.

'There was a movie, a script that I'd read and loved and was like, 'I want to get that,' and then someone said, 'Kevin Costner has that [role],' the Thor star began.

'I'd love [to have] him as a director. I was like, 'Goddamnit!' [I spent] an hour the other day trying to convince him, and he was like, 'I'm doing it, kid.' Didn't work. I didn't get the part.'

Hemsworth remained tight-lipped on the name of the film, describing it as 'abstract and interesting… a small story about a man and a woman.'
