Martin Roberts has opened up about the mental effects of his near death experience after he underwent emergency heart surgery back in 2022.

The Homes Under the Hammer presenter, 60, previously shared how he was told he had 'a few hours to live' after finding out he was suffering from pericardial effusion, which is a build-up of fluid in the structure around the heart, and was rushed into surgery that saved his life.

Speaking about the surgery two years on, Martin is still struggling to heal from the mental impact of the surgery and how it has changed his attitude to life as he admitted: 'I was told to slow down, but I did the opposite'.

In an interview with The Mirror he confessed: 'I can't understate the mental after-effects of what happened to me. The physical stuff you get over, but it's the overriding thought it could have all ended.

'Everything you tried to do, and your family, you realise it could all be gone. I was told I needed to slow down and I've gone the other way. Hopefully I've got many years but you never know.

'That whole thing that happened to me makes you realise how thin a thread we dangle from. But you can't go through life living in that fear.'

After the health scare, Martin decided to grab life by both hands and has currently embarked on a new renovation project to help change teenagers' lives.

For his latest venture the star has bought a run down pub and hotel nestled in the former coal mining village of Blaencwm in the Rhondda Valley, an hour from Cardiff.
