Lenny Kravitz, 59, explains the reason why he wears leather pants and boots ... trends now

Lenny Kravtiz has long been described by fans, admirers and journalists as the quintessential rockstar who's one cool cat.

But just last month, some people questioned his motivation for working out at a gym in tight leather pants, boots, a crop top and sunglasses, which was documented in a TikTok video that ultimately went viral, while others just chalked it to him just being the rockstar that he is 24/7.

Now, some three weeks after sharing the clip showing him hitting the weights hard with a personal trainer, the Fly Away musician offered up an explanation as to why he sometimes wears what most consider to be unusual gym attire.

'I'm always working out in leather pants or jeans and boots and whatever — if I'm not doing cardio,' he told Variety when asked why it got so much attention. 'If I'm doing cardio, obviously I'm going to wear sweats because I'm going to be sweating all over the place. But if I'm lifting weights, I don't sweat so much.'

He continued, 'So, a lot of times I'm coming from somewhere or I'm going somewhere. And I just don't care. I'm gonna pop in, I've got 45 minutes, we're gonna hit it and I'm gonna go run to where I'm going. So I don't do it for effect. I didn't do that to be like, "Oh, let me be just so different and wear leather pants and glasses." No, it's just me walking in off the street.'

Lenny Kravitz caused quite the stir in early April when he posted a video of him working out in leather pants, boots, a crop top and sunglasses, which garnered reaction from both supporters and critics alike

'Thank God for today! Grateful. Never been better,' he wrote in the caption of the April 9 post. 'There are no shortcuts so seize your day. It is all possible. Love!'

But for Kravitz, the leather pants, mesh tan top, boots, and cool shades are just a part of who is stylistically on an everyday basis.

The Are You Gonna Go My Way also found himself defending the exercise techniques he's using with his trainer Dodd Romero in the video.

'I know my body and what my body does and what it can do and how it feels and it’s all good,” he explained, before specifying that he's trained with some famous athletes without disclosing any of their identities.

'I trained with elite athletes, I trained with football players, NFL and NBA stars. I trained with MLB stars, wrestlers, boxers. I've played with them all,' he declared in the interview. 'I won't mention names, but they're all people you would know. And they'll tell you I train very seriously.'

The Grammy winner, who's poised to release his new studio album Blue Electric Light on May 24, shared about one specific instance when he went into a gym for a workout with a bunch of buff and ripped athletes, and proved those big guys wrong.

'These big athletes saw me walking in and my trainer said "He's gonna work out with us." And they all started laughing. Because I was wearing jeans and a belt and boots and whatever shirt I was wearing, and they were like, "We're gonna work out with this little rock star dude?"' he explained. 'Like they were making fun of me. And I destroyed them. And they didn't see it coming.'
