Almost a quarter of children aged 10 and 11 in British primary schools are clinically obese, according to the latest NHS data — and for pupils in the poorest areas, that figure rises above 30 per cent.
Yet when chef Marcus Wareing visited a school in the south of France to help out in the canteen, on his foodie travel show Simply Provence, not one of the youngsters appeared to be overweight.
All had healthy appetites. Every plate went back to the kitchen scraped clean. And they weren’t eating chicken nuggets with chips.
In fact, the youngsters at this school in Ville de Saint-Remy-de-Provence sat down to table service and a three-course meal every lunchtime.

On the day Marcus visited, that meant gazpacho or chilled vegetable soup, with a bread basket for the first course. That was followed by fresh vegetables with pasta, and lemon polenta cake for dessert.
Other specialities of the house include lobster bisque with calamari or fried squid with a garlic and olive oil sauce called aioli.
