Katherine Ryan was so 'depressed' after teenage split from now-husband Bobby ... trends now

Katherine Ryan has revealed she became 'truly depressed' after her now-husband Bobby Kootstra dumped her as a teenager, decades before they rekindled their romance and got married.

The comedian, 40, and her husband were childhood sweethearts in their native Canada, before they parted ways for 20 years.

However, in 2018 they reunited after crossing paths by chance when Katherine returned to Canada to film for Who Do You Think You Are?

The couple are now married and share children Fred, two, and Fenna, 17 months, as well as Katherine's daughter Violet, 14, from a previous relationship.

The TV presenter has now opened up about their teenage romance, admitting that she was so heartbroken by their split that she once refused to leave her dad's apartment during a fire evacuation.

Speaking to Gyles Brandreth on his Rosebud podcast, she explained she had been 'on watch' following the breakup, which coincided with a series of difficult family tragedies.

Katherine recalled: '[The relationship] lasted about a year, until he split up with me and I was heartbroken when he split up with me.

'That's when everything started crumbling. My gran had died, my parents divorced and my grandad died soon after my gran died.'

She admitted she became so down that she could barely eat or leave the house, comparing herself to a 'sad skeleton'.

When a fire alarm was pulled in her dad's apartment building, Katherine just lay on the floor, causing her father to fear the worst.

She said: 'I was really heartbroken. I pulled out all my eyelashes and most of my eyebrows. I got really thin because I ate only Cool Ranch Doritos for an entire month. I was truly depressed.

'And I was at my dad's equally depressing bachelor apartment one night, that he'd chosen because it was opposite the golf course, and someone pulled the fire alarm.

'And I remember I was laying on the floor-  eating Cool Ranch Doritos probably - and my dad had gone out for ice cream with my sisters.
