Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door (Nintendo Switch, £49.99)
Verdict: Reams of fun
What would happen if you took away from Mario almost everything that makes him Mario? No frenetic bouncing from platform to platform. No dispatching enemies with a single bounce on the head. All in a slightly seedier location than usual — oh, and he's made of paper now, too.
That's effectively what Nintendo did 20 years ago, when they released Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, a sequel to 2000's Paper Mario.
This Japanese RPG was more about story and character. The combat was deliberate and turn-based. Its whole world was origami. And it ended up being not just one of the best Mario games — but one of the best games ever.
