Benidorm not axed: Show creator Derren Litten backtracks on tweets

Benidorm creator Derren Litten has revealed his hit show hasn't been axed, despite a host of fans believing that was the case after he posted a cryptic tweet.

The director, 47, sparked concern the long-running programme about British guests at a budget holiday resort had been cancelled this week, after posting 'Crazy to think Wednesday will be the last episode of Benidorm!'

Yet after the finale aired on Wednesday, Derren admitted he was only referring to the last episode of the season, not the entire show.

Talking to Alex Lester on BBC West Midlands radio on Thursday, Derren said: 'It was a tweet that… the show's been on for 10 years now and I'm pretty much certain that it's the kind of tweet I've done every year where I'd say "This is the last episode this week…"

'Then somebody said, "Oh the last episode ever" and I didn't put that. Obviously it's not a case of mistaken identity kind of thing, but when people said, "Oh this is the last episode ever", I've got to admit I didn't correct them.'

After the finale aired Derren shared a cast photo on Twitter that he captioned: 'Muchas Gracias from all Series X cast and crew / This is just adios and not goodbye... ;-)'.

Whilst he confirmed that Benidorm has not officially been cancelled, Derren revealed that Wednesday's finale could ultimately still end up being their last episode, as ITV have yet to sign up for the next series.

He confessed: 'The honest truth is I don’t know. How it works every year is ITV tell us if they want another series.

'We’re doing a live stage tour and this has been booked in, if you like, for well, over six months, so the fact is ITV knew they didn’t have to make a decision quickly… but they knew we can’t film as we usually would in March this year, of this year, because (I’ve) got them on the road.'

An ITV spokesperson told MailOnline: 'No decision has been made yet regarding a further series.'
