Her career began in the 1980s when she won the Yamaha World Popular Song Festival and the Eurovision Song Contest. She represented Switzerland in the latter competition.

During the early days of her career, Celine released a number of French-only albums. Eventually, she was noticed by Epic Records and landed her first big deal.

Her debut English album was released in 1990. The project was called Unison.

With the help of her manager, and much later her husband, Rene Angelil, Celine went on to be an international star.

Her 1996 album Falling Into You and 1997 album Let's Talk About Love were both certified diamond in America. D'eux, which was released in 1995, became the best-selling French album ever.

In 1999, amid rapidly growing success, Celine announced that she was taking a break from the spotlight to focus on family. At the time, her husband Rene had been diagnosed with cancer.

Celine made her comeback in 2002 when she signed on to perform in A New Day...nightly at the Colosseum at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, Nevada. Her residency is considered the most successful in history.

It raked in about $385 million (£283.2m).

Throughout her career, Celine has won five Grammy Awards. She's also one of the highest-selling Canadian artists and best-selling artists overall.

In 2014 Celine announced that she would be taking some time away from the business. This meant her Celine residency at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, Nevada, which was announced in 2010, was indefinitely postponed.

She also canceled her Asia Tour.

As it turned out, Celine's husband Rene's cancer had returned. His condition deteriorated after he went in to have a cancerous tumor removed at the end
