Pregnant women in the US are dying up to a year after giving birth - mostly as a result of heart issues that could have been prevented, the CDC says.
America is the most dangerous place to conceive in the developed world, with double the rate of maternal and fetal mortality compared to any other peer nation.
New data from the CDC, published today, reveal 700 women die a year from pregnancy complications - a third during gestation, a third during or immediately after delivery, and a third up to a year later.
But experts say most could have been prevented, particularly the 34 percent caused by heart conditions, and the 12.5 percent caused by infections.
