Virginia and New Jersey report first vaping-related fatalities, bringing the US death toll up to 17 A Virginia resident died on September 26 at a hospital in Greensboro, North Carolina after developing vaping-related lung disease   A unnamed New Jersey female resident died in August from vaping as well  There have been 31 cases of vaping-related illness, including the death, reported in Virginia and 14 in New Jersey Across the US, 805 illnesses have been reported, mostly in people who vaped THC before they got sick

Virginia and New Jersey have each reported their first deaths related to vaping, bringing the US total count up to 17.

The death in Virginia, an adult who lived in the southwest region, occurred on September 26 at a hospital in Greensboro, North Carolina. 

The New Jersey death, an adult female who lived in the northern part of the state, occurred in August.

No details about either victims' names or ages are being released to protect the privacy of their respective families.
