Ever wanted a bit more privacy when you’re messaging from your phone? You're in luck.

'Stealth' settings are becoming more common and advanced as Apple and Meta (the firm behind WhatsApp and Facebook) battle to show they are more privacy-focused.

These range from self-deleting ‘disappearing’ messages to stopping people from seeing if you’ve read the message they just sent (or even if you are online at all).

You can send a message in ‘invisible ink’, which recipients can swipe on the screen to reveal: the invisible ink is one of Apple’s animated effects for message bubbles.

To activate it, type a message in a new or existing conversation.

Touch and hold the send button, then tap the grey dots to preview different effects.

Tap the send button to send the message.

Stop people from snooping your iMessages over your shoulder

If you’ve got an iPhone X or later, the TrueDepth camera intelligently activates so that others don’t see your messages in iMessage

If you’re looking at your camera, it will show a full preview of your message on your lock screen to you, but if someone else were to look at your iPhone it would not show them the preview.

To enable this feature, go to Settings Face ID and Passcode, and push the slider to enable Attention Aware Features.

Stop iMessage contacts from seeing if you’ve read a message

Having a friend or colleague see that you’ve read their message can be useful - but it can also be irritating, as it means you have to reply.

Thankfully, it is possible to switch off the feature - whether you want to do it for all conversations or just a single one.

Go to Settings Messages, then turn Read Receipts on or off.

Delete an IMessage you've just sent

We’ve all had that moment when you send a message and then think, ‘No!’ - thankfully, it’s possible to unsend iMessage messages for up to two minutes.

The recipient will have a message letting them know you unsent a message - but they will not know what it said.

To unsend a message, tap it, touch and hold the message bubble, and then tap Undo Send.

A note confirming that you unsent the message appears in both your and the recipient's conversation transcripts.

‘Stealth Mode’ enables users to hide whether they are online or not,

It also lets a person decide who in particular they want to allow to see their online status.
