Young English players may find it easier to get into Gareth Southgate's squad by playing in the Championship rather than sitting on the bench in the Premier League, according to England's coach.

'The reality is we can't rule out Championship players because the numbers suggest we have not to close the door to anything,' said Southgate.

He used the announcement of his squad to play Spain at Wembley on Saturday, and to face Switzerland the following week, to draw attention to the fact that the amount of English players starting in Premier League matches had fallen to 30 per cent in the opening games of this season.
