The All Black No 10 discovered the training top, personalised with Shields's initials, after scoring four tries in last week's victory over Australia.
Shields temporarily lodged at Barrett's home in Wellington before flying to the UK last week to join Wasps.
The pair were long-standing team-mates at the Hurricanes, before Shields decided to pledge his future to the Red Rose. Barrett may decide to return the shirt when the All Blacks face England in November.
