Jose Gomes earned his first win as Reading boss as nine-man Nottingham Forest slumped to defeat at the Madejski Stadium.

A first-half strike from John Swift and a late own goal from Jack Robinson ensured the Championship strugglers’ 11-game winless run came to a welcome end. Their job was made easier by Forest captain Danny Fox and Tendayi Darikwa both seeing red.

The result compounded a tumultuous 36 hours for Forest, whose boss Aitor Karanka left under a cloud on the eve of this crucial fixture.
