sport news How are airbrushing Cristiano Ronaldo out of their history

On the home page of their website Real Madrid proudly display four of their players who were selected in UEFA's team of 2018. Not in the picture, however, is the talismanic figure who inspired them to make history last year, and who was also selected in that team of the year.

It's perhaps to be expected that Raphael Varane, Sergio Ramos, Luka Modric and Marcelo are the players posing in this season's strip. Cristiano Ronaldo, after all, did not stay around long enough to try it for size.

Click on the article and there is a brief mention that Ronaldo also featured in the team but it's strangely underplayed that they had five not four players in UEFA's gala XI. It is also one more example of a very subtle removal of Ronaldo from the public face of the club who broke all records for during his nine-year spell.

No sooner had he left Real Madrid last summer than the club stopped following him on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram - unlike Manchester United, who still follow their legendary No 7. It might have lost Real access to his 32 million-plus Twitter followers but it seemed like them making a clean break. It became a mutual social media divorce when Ronaldo later responded the same way.

They know they can't completely wipe almost of decade of history away and he still has his place in the legends section of their website, but they stop well short of bragging about the fact that one of the greatest players of all time spent his best years at the Bernabeu.

Elsewhere on Real's website, the subtle shift of focus away from Ronaldo continues. The club choose to showcase Alfredo Di Stefano and Zinedine Zidane, rather than Ronaldo, as figureheads for their Football History and Football Legends sections.

In a section that celebrates the club's most recent major trophies won, Ronaldo can only be seen in the background of one trophy photo, while the likes of Ramos, Modric, Marcelo and former captain Iker Casillas take centre stage.

There have been suggestions that the club have done their best to keep Ronaldo footage at a minimum on their official television channel. If they want to feature another player's greatest moments and there are highlights of him scoring from Ronaldo's assists or assisting a Ronaldo goal then they will go looking for other highlights clip involving other players.

One source close to Ronaldo told Sportsmail that the theory that he was being airbrushed out where possible was a solid one, but that it was nothing unusual – it happens to all players when they leave the club. Real Madrid always moves on.

That is true to an extent. Even club captain Raul had to wait three years for an appropriate homage for his 741 games and 323 goals.

Ahead of the tribute match dedicated to him and played against his new team Al Sadd in 2013 he said: 'Three years ago I said goodbye here in this press room but I could not say goodbye to the fans the way I wanted to.'

Part of the reason for the delay in a dignified 'adios' for Raul was that he moved to another Champions League team, Schalke. It was only when he was no longer a potential rival to Real Madrid did the love start to show.
