Joe Root has told his fledgling opening pair to focus on the short-term goal of success in the Caribbean rather than nailing down Ashes places.

Keaton Jennings and Rory Burns head into England's three-match Test series against West Indies with a 100 per cent win record as a first-wicket combination following the whitewashing of Sri Lanka.

However, they both enter the Wisden Trophy - starting at the famous Kensington Oval in Barbados on Wednesday - with batting averages in the mid-20s. Not the kind of numbers to merit selection for a series against Australia.
