Paul Scholes once said he wasn't sure he would miss the world of football that much once he had retired.

Now, five-and-a-half years after he last kicked a ball for Manchester United, it appears he has changed his mind.

For Scholes, 44, it has been Saturday afternoons that have been the hardest. Glued to his phone watching results come in but, crucially, no longer involved.

Expected to be confirmed as the new manager of Oldham at the start of next week, Scholes looks and sounds ready to return.

'You're watching the results come in on a Saturday afternoon and you think you want to be involved in that,' said Scholes.

'Whatever level it is you want to fight for something. I've got to a point now where if something does come up, I don't want to be sitting at home wondering about it.

'I want to give it a go and see what happens. I've been sitting at home for five years feeling not challenged whatsoever. It makes you, not depressed, but it makes you sad really when for 20-odd years, from leaving school,
