Pep Guardiola warned Manchester City against risking dressing room anarchy by smashing their wage structure after missing out on Ajax's Frenkie De Jong.
City's top midfield target agreed terms with Barcelona this week in a deal that could reach £74million, with De Jong pocketing in the region of £300,000 a week.
Guardiola - who recently claimed the Premier League champions are only 'eighth or ninth in Europe' in terms of spending - believes matching that salary would have had repercussions.
