Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino insists that the best can still crash out Mauricio Pochettino insists it's difficult to thrive when you don't have right tools Tottenham didn't sign any players for second transfer window in succession Pochettino's team, who are third, host Newcastle on Saturday afternoon By Matt Barlow for the Daily Mail Published: 22:31 GMT, 1 February 2019 | Updated: 22:31 GMT, 1 February 2019 Viewcomments Mauricio Pochettino admits Tottenham do not have the fastest car and is a self-confessed cautious driver but still hopes his slow and steady approach can prove effective in the title race. 'It's easy to be passionate and shout 'I am a winner' but if you don't have the tools to win it's difficult,' said Pochettino, as he prepared to face Newcastle on Saturday aware victory will lift Spurs into second in the Premier League above Manchester City, who take on Arsenal on Sunday. 'Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso are the best drivers in Formula One but if you put Hamilton in a McLaren last season and Alonso in a Mercedes it would be Hamilton on the bottom and Alonso on the top. Mauricio Pochettino insists it's difficult to win when you don't have the right tools 'I follow Formula One and I love McLaren but it wasn't competitive last season.' Hamilton won the F1 Drivers' Championship in his Mercedes last year while Alonso came in 11th in his McLaren. 'Do you think that's a problem with Alonso or the car?' said Pochettino. 'Also, you can have an amazing car but you can crash after the first bend. You can crash with an amazing car and not win.' His affection for McLaren comes after the British sports car manufacturers lent two high-performance vehicles to Daniel Levy and the Spurs chairman passed the keys for one of them to his manager. 'I used it once, from my house to the training ground and it was so dangerous I gave it back,' said Pochettino. 'Daniel is quicker than me. I am so cautious driving.' Tottenham boss Pochettino is hopeful that his slow and steady approach can be successful Tottenham did not add to their squad in January and have not signed a player for more than a year but Harry Kane is on the mend with his personal fitness coach in the Bahamas. Kane is expected to return to London this weekend although is still some way short of a return. Misfit Vincent Janssen, meanwhile, will be given the chance to revive his Spurs career after failing to find a move before the transfer deadline. Janssen, a £15million signed from AZ Alkmaar in 2016, has not made Spurs appearance for nearly 18 months, while on loan at Fenerbahce and recovering from a foot operation. Pochettino revealed that striker Vincent Janssen will now be involved with the squad 'He is going to be involved with the first team and will have the chance to play like any other player,' said Pochettino. 'Before, it was clear, he wanted to leave and was not in our plan. 'We tried to find a solution but when that was impossible it was important to make him feel again like he can be helpful. My decision was to open the door and invite him in again.' Janssen has played four times for Tottenham's Under-23s but is not considered ready to feature against Newcastle, who beat Manchester City on Tuesday to give Pochettino a glimpse of second place. 'We all want to touch the glory,' said the Spurs boss. 'A lot can happen and there is a lot of games to play.'
