Lionel Messi scored twice for Barcelona as they fought back from 2-0 down against Valencia but then picked up a knock on his thigh as Barça dropped two points at home.

Messi converted his 50th La Liga penalty – only Cristiano Ronaldo and Hugo Sanchez had previously reached a half century.

He then added a second with what was his 21st of the season in La Liga but Valencia held on for their point having scored through Kevin Gameiro and Dani Parejo.

Valencia took the lead on 24 minutes when Rodrigo raced clear and slipped Gameiro through to score past Marc Andre ter Stegen.

On 32 minutes it was two when Sergio Roberto fouled Daniel Wass in the area and Dani Parejo slammed home the penalty.

Messi pulled a goal back for Barcelona six minutes before the break. Toni Lato had brought down Nelson Semedo and Messi stepped up to calmly send Neto the wrong way.
