For the briefest of moments, Maurizio Sarri allowed himself a smile. And then, just as quickly, he was back on his seat and adding to his opus of notes.

Quite what he was writing is a mystery. Gonzalo Higuain had just scored a goal of tremendous quality from 25 yards for 4-0, and really there was only so much one could say about it.

But whatever minutiae Sarri spotted in the move, whatever the detail that caught his eye, the Italian will know the bigger picture looks far better than it did. Not that he ever doubted himself or his methods, but it all looked far prettier and far more convincing in the evening than it had in the morning.

And that is largely down to Higuain, who scored his first two Chelsea goals in this rout of Huddersfield. At this point it is necessary to stress he did not have a great game. Not by a stretch. In fact he was occasionally woeful. Have a closer look at the first half, in particular, and some of those loose touches.

In order, his half went something like this: crunched by Terence Kongolo on 90 seconds; disposed by Christopher Schindler a moment later; robbed by Philip Billing; good finish for his goal on 16 minutes; beats man and gives ball away; decent shot but off target; tackled by Kongolo; runs down blind alley after being put through by Hazard.
