JB Holmes catches Justin Thomas to win Genesis Open as Rory McIlroy finishes fourth to keep up good form By Derek Lawrenson for the Daily Mail Published: 01:12 GMT, 18 February 2019 | Updated: 01:12 GMT, 18 February 2019 Viewcomments No wonder they say slow and steady wins the race. The incredibly slow American JB Holmes proved steadiness personified to overcome capricious winds and some stellar names including Rory McIlroy to claim the Genesis Open. McIlroy holed a bunker shot at the 16th but finished 5,5 when 4,4 would have set a stringent target, and had to settle for a tie for fourth place - his third top five from three starts this season. 'I gave myself a chance to set a target but the wind fooled me at the 18th,' confessed the Northern Irishman. JB Holmes reeled in Justin Thomas with a fourth-round 70 to win the Genesis Open Rory McIlroy made a late challenge but fell away on the last two holes The most disappointed man of all was Justin Thomas, who began the final round with a four stroke lead but stumbled to a 75. Holmes caught him with a 70 for a one-shot victory. So another year has come and gone without tournament host Tiger Woods winning the biggest event in the game still missing from his incredible c.v. The 43 year old spilled shots late on and acknowledged he got tired as the conditions deteriorated and it became, in his words, a 'war of attrition.' But there was a golden spell in the middle of the event where he played 26 holes in 10 under par and impressed Sir Nick Faldo enough to predict some fireworks from Woods this summer. 'I think he is swinging the club as well as I have ever seen him,' enthused the six-time major winner.
