Tom Heaton to be watched ahead of possible England recall while Sean Longstaff and Declan Rice will be assessed as West Ham host Newcastle Keeper Tom Heaton may earn England recall after regaining spot at Burnley England will host Czech Republic on March 22 and visit Montenegro on March 25 Declan Rice and Sean Longstaff will be watched as West Ham host NewcastleBy Craig Hope for MailOnline Published: 18:34 GMT, 1 March 2019 | Updated: 18:34 GMT, 1 March 2019 1 Viewcomments Gareth Southgate will watch Burnley goalkeeper Tom Heaton for the second weekend running as he nears an England recall, while assistant Steve Holland is being sent to check on young midfielders Declan Rice and Sean Longstaff. Heaton looks certain to be included in the squad for this month’s Euro 2020 qualifiers against Czech Republic and Montenegro, 21 months on from the last of his three caps. Southgate saw the 32-year-old star in last Saturday’s 2-1 win over Spurs and he will again be in the stands at Turf Moor when they take on Crystal Palace on Saturday. Burnley keeper Tom Heaton may be set for an England recall after earning his place back Everton stopper Jordan Pickford is likely to retain the No.1 jersey - Southgate will be at Sunday's Merseyside derby - but Heaton’s form will provide welcome competition, especially with Jack Butland having remained at Championship strugglers Stoke this season. Meanwhile, Southgate will be waiting on reports from right-hand man Holland after his visit to the London Stadium at tea-time. A lot has been made of West Ham’s Rice and Newcastle’s Longstaff competing for a place in Southgate’s next squad. Declan Rice (L) and Sean Longstaff (R) will be watched by England assistant Steve Holland Rice, 20, is in the process of switching allegiance from Republic of Ireland and, should that paperwork go through, he is set for a maiden call-up. But Ireland boss Mick McCarthy has suggested that Rice - who has defected after winning three friendly caps - could be behind rival Longstaff in the England reckoning. ‘I think he (Rice) is a really good player,’ said McCarthy. ‘But I have to say, he’s going for that sitting role in the England team, and I’m watching Longstaff play for Newcastle and he was excellent (in midweek), so there will be a lot of competition.’ Longstaff, 21, has been shortlisted for the Premier League Player of the Month for February and England Under-21s boss Aidy Boothroyd watched him during last weekend’s 2-0 win over Huddersfield. It is likely he will enter the Three Lions set-up at that level - he has never been capped before - but were he to outshine Rice then calls would grow for him to jump the queue.
