If this extraordinary week of European football has taught us anything, it is that no lead should be taken for granted. No matter the name, no matter the stage, no club is quite safe from the perils of a humbling on the continent.
In this tie, we may have found an exception. Chelsea have a a three-goal lead to protect next week in eastern Europe but it might well have been a margin of six on a night they utterly dominated their porous Ukrainian opponents.
Manager Maurizio Sarri may well regret the manner in which his team passed up a succession of first-half chances but from a meek and limited Dynamo Kiev side, there was little sense at all of the courage and quality required to overturn this result.
Callumk Hudson-Odoi wrapped up proceedings by finishing off a well-crafted team goal in the 90th minute of the tie
Dynamo defenders threw themselves at the youngster, but he was still able to direct his effort beneath bodies and on target
The Bayern Munich target peeled away with a smile on his face after adding another goal to his Chelsea collection
Hudson-Odoi quickly turned around to thank his team-mates, who had engineered the move with a swift counter attack
Brazil international Willian doubled the lead for the Blues by pulling off one of his trademark, pinpoint precision freekicks
The winger got the ball up and over the wall with an artistic combination of power, pace and placement, as the crowd waited
Despite the Dynamo Kiev wall being at full jump, the freekick was so well struck that their efforts were left redundant
Willian sprinted away to the corner and punched the air in delight, as all around his Chelsea fans burst into celebration
The visitors did not have a shot on goal until 73 minutes and even then, Kiev's first effort of the game sailed harmlessly over the bar from distance.
Chelsea's only threat appears to be their own complacency, as underlined late on when they switched off and Kiev substitute Sidcley misjudged golden chance to head his side an away goal.
On paper at least, Dynamo Kiev appeared to be a useful team that may trouble Chelsea. They defeated Rennes, conquerors of Arsenal, home and away in the group stage and then beat Olympiacos in the previous round.
With that in mind, Sarri might have been tempted to play his strongest side and seek a commanding lead to take to Kiev next week. Sarri, however, is attempting to balance a hectic schedule and this was his side's seventh match in eighteen days.
As such, he plumped for freshness, resting the spine of his team, as Cesar Azpilicueta, Antonio Rudiger, N'Golo Kante, Eden Hazard and Gonzalo Higuain all dropped out. Much to the frustration of the club's support, and quite feasibly the boardroom, Sarri could not find a place for academy graduates Ruben Loftus-Cheek or Callum Hudson-Odoi.
