Graham Thorpe is to become England’s new main batting coach and is in line for extra responsibility when Trevor Bayliss leaves after the Ashes following the demotion on Friday of Mark Ramprakash.
Former Middlesex and Surrey batsman Ramprakash was told by England team director Ashley Giles that he will not be involved in this summer’s Ashes series and will have to spend the last few months of his contract that runs out in September in a peripheral role.
It is another bold and ruthless move by Giles, who last month told assistant coach Paul Farbrace that he should leave at the end of England’s Caribbean tour rather than stay on for the World Cup once he had decided to join Warwickshire.
